Brown mushrooms (Agaricus Bispores sync.A. brunnescens) have a firmer texture than white mushrooms, is slightly stronger with a nuttier flavour and is a favourite amoungst chefs all over the world.
Brown Braai mushrooms also known as Portabello‘s or Steaks, are the biggest commercially available mushrooms in size and is an excellent alternative to meat. They are rich in fibre,
proteins, minerals and vitamins for a balanced diet. It can be cooked, grilled or barbecued, hence their name. Ideal for “Meatless Mondays“!
Brown mushrooms are usually picked when they are open and the gills are visible but can also be picked while still closed in the button form. It is known as Portabellini or Crimini in the trade. They are highly versatile and their dense flesh makes them ideal for using whole, raw or cooked.
